Love Hormones in Teenagers– Some Scientific Facts

Love hormones in teenagers can be synonymously called teenage hormones as the two are almost inseparable. The teens period sees a surge in body hormones which has much to do with both the emotional and physical growth of teenagers and largely affects the way they feel about themselves.

Both boys and girls go through physical and emotional changes at a certain age (roughly between 12– 14 years) and reach what is called ‘puberty’. During this time, the health hormones of teenagers go in overdrive producing testosterone hormones in boys and estrogen hormones in girls. These hormones along with other hormones are responsible for stimulating growth and cell production in the body.

Testosterone hormones are responsible for the development of sexual and other physical developments in males and manifest the typical male qualities in them. These hormones are what give the boys their facial hair and rapid male growth in other parts of the body. The testosterone hormone is also present in females but in lesser amounts. They bring about the changes during teens.

The female equivalent of these male hormones is the estrogen hormones and they along with progesterone hormones are two most important female hormones. These two hormones are responsible for the onset of puberty in teen girls which results in body development and the start of various typically female bodily functions like menstruation. When in harmony, the two hormones let the female body perform its functions smoothly but when they deviate from their normal levels, it causes a hormonal imbalance and birth control hormones may be required to correct the problem.

The growth hormones are also known as ‘HGH’ and they are secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain. Although this hormone is produced throughout childhood, its secretion becomes more active during the teens period. The secretion of growth hormones starts declining during adulthood.

The main function of these hormones is to increase the muscle mass and the height and to help in maintaining healthy bones, controlling sugar and insulin levels, retaining calcium and reducing fat during the period of rapid growth. Love hormones are the main factors for bodily changes in adolescents and also affect the mental make-up of teenagers.
