Baby food con­t­a­m­i­na­tion is a major issues and par­ents rais­ing small chil­dren can­not be too vig­i­lant in tak­ing note of these peri­odic out­breaks of con­t­a­m­i­na­tion in baby foods and prepar­ing healthy, fresh and safe foods for their chil­dren is the top­most pri­or­ity for all fam­i­lies. Con­t­a­m­i­nated baby food can lead to tod­dler vom­it­ing and teething diar­rhea.

  • The quest for safe food begins with how you shop at the super­mar­ket or gro­cery store. Shop only at reputed stores which are clean, well main­tained and which have poul­try and meat prod­ucts sup­plied from state inspected plants.
  • For fish, look for places where sup­plies are pro­cured from sources approved by the state.
  • Look at the “sell by” and “use by” dates and use the prod­uct accordingly.
  • Cross con­t­a­m­i­na­tion may eas­ily occur if cooked food is kept in the same case as raw foods. Do not buy Glass jars or cans with cracks or dents are to be avoided; food in such con­tain­ers can con­tain harm­ful microor­gan­isms. Each   box or bag should be exam­ined – make sure these are with­out rips or tears.
  • Buy only refrig­er­ated or frozen poul­try, meat or seafood and slimy, odor­ous or dis­col­ored foods should be strictly avoided.
  • Fruits and veg­eta­bles should be free from decay or molds. Any food prod­uct that is dam­aged, brown­ish or slimy should be avoided. Fruits or veg­eta­bles should be stored in plas­tic bags at home.
  • Fish should smell fresh and mild and not fishy. There should be no yel­low­ish or brown dis­col­oration and it should not look dark near the edges.
  • Only pas­teur­ized milk, cheeses and juices should be bought as pas­teur­iza­tion kills harm­ful bac­te­ria. If you are not sure that the prod­uct is pas­teur­ized, boil it for a minute, and then cool it before drinking.Eggs should have clean shells with no cracks and graded A or AA.
  • Ready to eat fruits and veg­eta­bles should be bought only if refrig­er­ated or kept in ice.
  • When shop­ping for food, choose per­ish­able items last. Go straight home after gro­cery shopping.
